Tax Cuts to be Focus of Lame-Duck Congress
The 111th Congress returns to work in a few weeks following Tuesday's elections to close out its final legislative works before the new Congress takes office in January.

November 03, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The 111th Congress returns to work in a few weeks following Tuesday's elections to close out its final legislative works before the new Congress takes office in January. On the schedule for debate are several unfinished economic reform issues, including jobless benefits and tax cuts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who retained his seat in a tough-fought battle against Republican Tea Partier Sharron Angle, reminded Congress that there is still a long list of things to accomplish before the end of the session. This lame-duck session could be more contentious than most, with Republicans only winning control of the House and making them less likely to compromise on issues like tax cuts.

The Bush administration tax cuts of 2001 are set to expire in December, and the White House has been unable to reach a compromise with Democrats and Republicans on how or whether to renew the legislation. If alternative-minimum tax policies are not passed into law by January, more than 29 million Americans will be paying more taxes next year.
