The special election, slated for Sept. 1st, was set after Tauscher was confirmed as Undersecretary of State for Arms Control and International Security.

Since 2008 the number of women in office has declined. Women are currently down two governors and one House Member (Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand was not replaced by a woman). Women can't afford to lose any more seats, especially in the male dominated and heated special election in California's tenth district.

Joan Buchanan has spent years as a top executive at Delta Dental and a highly successful member of the San Ramon Valley School Board while the district went from a $7 million budget deficit to a $11 million-plus rainy day fund during her years there.
