BURNABY, BC, CANADA, November 28, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- One hundred years ago, on Dec 2, 1908, Pu Yi aged 2 years and 10 months was taken from his mother to the Forbidden City be enthroned as the Emperor of China. He would not see his mother again for 6 years.
Four years later, the boy emperor was forced to abdicate, and in the ensuing years he became a prisoner of his status. Pu Yi was expelled from the Forbidden City by the revolutionary forces in 1924 and sought refuge with the Japanese Legation. He was enthroned again in 1932 as the puppet ruler of Manchukuo until the defeat of the Japanese. He was imprisoned for 10 years and upon release became an ordinary citizen of China until his death in 1967.
Honouring the 100th anniversary Soul Care Publishing is pleased to announce the re-release of Twlight in the Forbidden City by Reginald Fleming Johnston, Puyi's tutor.
Johnston was the one of the two foreigners in history to be allowed inside the inner court of the Qing Dynasty. Johnston carried high imperial titles and lived in both the Forbidden City and the New Summer Palace.
Twilight in the Forbidden City has been cited as the main reference for the creation of the movie The Last Emperor by Bernardo Bertolucci. Once again readers can enjoy Johnston's insight. Twilight in the Forbidden City provides a fascinating view of the history leading up to Puyi's enthronement and the subsequent challenges he faced.
The revised 4th edition of Twilight in the Forbidden City contains all the original pictures plus a bonus previously unpublished chapter describing Johnston's meeting with the 13th Dalai Lama.
Twilight in the Forbidden City and other books by Reginald Fleming Johnston are available at Amazon.com and other online bookstores.
